Welfare Allowance for Low-Income Families: New Gazette
A gazette notification has been issued recently regarding the new procedure for providing monthly allowances to eligible families and individuals under the Aswesuma Welfare Allowance Scheme from January 2025.
This gazette notification was promulgated by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, on 21.12.2024.
Furthermore, this new notification repeals the gazette notification of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe dated 17 May 2024.
Furthermore, it has been decided to increase the allowance of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 17,500 for the poorest families.
It is also stated that 960,000 poor families will be provided with a monthly assistance of Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 17,000 respectively for the differently abled, vulnerable and very poor families and social groups receiving welfare benefits.
It is also stated that 960,000 poor families will be provided with a welfare allowance of Rs. 10,000.
This extends the compensation period for intermediate and vulnerable families up to 31.03.2025.
Therefore, it is announced that the Ashwesuma Welfare Payment System of 17 May 2024 is being cancelled.
However, the Gazette announces that beneficiaries who have already received benefits and who have experienced delays in payment, as well as applicants who have filed an appeal and are currently under consideration, will be provided with payments based on their eligibility up to 31.12.2024.
