Colombo Pettah Central Bus Stand Reopened After Major Renovation

Under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, the fully renovated Colombo Pettah Central Bus Stand was officially handed over for public use today (April 8, 2026).

The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Transport and Highways, Bimal Rathnayake, with the participation of Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena, Colombo Mayor Vrai Cally Balthazaar, and the Commander of the Air Force.

Key Upgrades and Features

The renovation has transformed the daily hub for thousands of commuters into a modern transport terminal. Key improvements include:

  • Infrastructure: Complete restoration of the bus stand buildings.
  • Passenger Comfort: A new information center and modernized seating areas.
  • Sanitation: Upgraded and improved sanitary facilities.
  • Beautification: Landscaping and aesthetic enhancements to the surrounding areas.

A Collaborative Effort

The Sri Lanka Air Force played a pivotal role in this project, providing the necessary technical expertise and manpower to ensure the high-quality completion of the works. The facility is now touted as meeting international standards for public transport terminals.

A Call to the Public

During his address, Minister Bimal Rathnayake emphasized that while the government has invested millions in this project, the long-term success of the facility rests with the citizens.

“It is the primary responsibility of the public to keep this bus station clean and beautiful. Only by protecting public property from damage can we ensure these high-quality services are available for years to come,” the Minister noted.
