Sridharan caught in interrogation at the airport
On the 10th, Jaffna MP S. Sridharan was stopped and questioned at the Katunayake airport, which has sparked a huge debate in political circles.
Sridharan had been invited as a special guest at the upcoming Tamil Day celebrations to be held under the patronage of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The Immigration and Emigration authorities have taken action as per the request of the CID to stop Sridharan.
Sridharan’s side has stated that the airport authorities said that there was an error in Sridharan’s passport and therefore he could not travel. So far, Sridharan has traveled abroad four times with a new passport, but there has been no notification of such an error. Therefore, suspicion has arisen in this situation.
In this regard, the acting leader of the Sri Lanka Tamil Arasu Party, CVK Sivannan, strongly condemned the treatment of a senior parliamentarian in this way. He also alleged that he was stopped at the airport after he made strong criticisms against Sinhalese immigration in Parliament.
At the same time, some say that Sridharan is being retaliated against due to internal issues within the party. Furthermore, some accuse him of causing this to prevent Sridharan from moving towards the next stage in his politics.
Speaking to the media today (12), Sridharan’s supporters said that there has been no official announcement regarding the stoppage. It has also been reported that there was no problem when he went to Canada ten days ago and that the exact reason is not known yet.
The incident is said to have various dimensions in political circles. While some have said that this action was taken in response to Sridharan’s views against the Anura government, others have accused him of being an attempt at revenge due to problems within the party.
