Spice and coconut oil fraud continues in Sri Lanka

The Public Health Inspectors Association has reported that the fraud of refining used coconut oil and sending it to the market is continuing.

Responding to this allegation, the association’s general secretary Sameera Muthukuda said, “To ensure that health standards are maintained during the festive season, public health inspectors have started inspections from December 1st.”

She said that during the inspections, mixed spices such as chili powder, curry leaves and turmeric were being sold to the public and complaints had been received about this.

She also said that more than 5,000 shops had been inspected and 450 shops had been booked for allegedly selling food that was unfit for consumption.
