Heavy rains: Warning to the public
The Department of Meteorology has announced that rainfall will increase slightly in the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva provinces of the country from today (30) for the next few days.
In a statement issued today (30.12.2024), thundershowers or occasional showers are likely in these areas. There is a possibility of rainfall exceeding 75 mm in some places.
In other areas, widespread rain or thundershowers are expected in the evening or night.
Furthermore, heavy rains of up to 75 mm may occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces.
Strong winds of up to 30-35 km per hour may occur in the Northern, Eastern and North Central provinces.
Fog may be observed in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces during the morning hours.
This monsoon rain and thunderstorms may be accompanied by temporary strong winds. The Department of Meteorology has advised the public to take appropriate precautions to reduce the risks posed by lightning strikes.
