Coconut Shortage in the Country – Government Action

Plantation and Social Infrastructure Minister Samantha Widyaratne has stated that the government has taken steps to increase coconut production in the North.

Addressing Parliament yesterday (21), he explained these measures.

He further stated that the government has allocated Rs. 1,437 million through the 2025 budget for the cultivation of 40,000 hectares of coconut trees in the Northern Coconut Triangle Zone.

The Minister also noted that the government has adopted a resolution to provide free fertilizer to coconut plantations of less than 5 hectares in the country.

He also stated that out of the 55,000 metric tons of fertilizer received from Russia, 27,500 metric tons of fertilizer has been allocated for coconut cultivation.
