Two Sri Lankans arrested in Katunayake for trying to travel to the UK
Two Sri Lankans who were trying to travel to the UK via Kathmandu, Nepal using fake Sri Lankan passports have been arrested at the Katunayake Airport.
The arrests were made yesterday (31) by officers of the Immigration and Emigration Department.
One of them is a 39-year-old resident of Batticaloa. He arrived at the Katunayake Airport with the intention of travelling to Kathmandu, Nepal on Indian Airlines flight AI-282.
After completing all his flight clearances and carrying out immigration-related procedures, his suspicious behaviour was noticed when he arrived at the immigration authorities.
Subsequently, when the authorities questioned him, a fake Sri Lankan passport with photographs was found among his travel belongings.
It has also been revealed that another person, who was carrying a similar fake Sri Lankan passport, cleared all the flight clearances and boarded the Indian flight itself.
Accordingly, the two suspects have been arrested and further investigations are underway.
