New Year welcomed with fireworks islandwide
To welcome the year 2025, poojas and worship services were held islandwide at midnight.
To celebrate the beginning of the New Year, lamps were lit at the historic Jaffna – Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, welcoming the year 2025 and offering many spiritual gifts. This event took place at 12 midnight today.
Meanwhile, at the main church of Kilinochchi district, St. Threshal Cathedral, services were held at 11.30 pm to welcome the year 2025. Furthermore, New Year midnight mass and poojas were held at the 155th St. Anthony’s Church in Kilinochchi.
In Batticaloa district, special services were held at the St. Mary’s Cathedral in Puliyandivu. These were held with a special joint mass led by the parish priest, Rev. Leslie Jayakanthan. At this event, prayers were offered to protect the people from the country’s economic crisis and natural disasters, and for the long-term peace and happiness of the country.
Along with this, the Gandhi Park and the Clock Tower in Batticaloa City were decorated with lights to welcome the New Year, and the city was illuminated. Thousands of people gathered in the city to watch and enjoy the fireworks celebrating the birth of the New Year.
To welcome the New Year with joy, the Batticaloa Headquarters Police strengthened security and took measures to ease traffic. Furthermore, people greeted each other and enjoyed themselves during the New Year.
Meanwhile, in the capital, Colombo, fireworks were performed to celebrate the birth of the New Year, and decorative lights were lit up throughout the capital.
