Japanese hybrid vehicles to be brought at lower prices
The government has not yet taken a decision on the new tax imposed on imported vehicles, Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa said.
He attended a media briefing held yesterday and stated that the Finance Ministry will issue an official statement in this regard in the near future.
The announcement comes amid increased interest from vehicle importers following the government’s decision to remove restrictions on the import of private vehicles.
Importers have requested the government to allow the import of hybrid vehicles up to seven years old from Japan to meet market demand.
However, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa explained that this proposal was not discussed in the recent Cabinet meeting.
He also stated that such proposals can only be considered if a formal proposal is presented by the Finance Ministry in consultation with vehicle importers.
The lifting of vehicle import restrictions has sparked a wide-ranging debate, with the affordability of vehicles and the implications of the new tax reportedly dominating the discussion.
