Heavy rain in the North – East: Important announcement to the public
The Department of Meteorology expects heavy rain to occur at many places in the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces.
Information on the possibility of such rain has been given in a statement issued today (10.12.2024).
There is a possibility of rain or thundershowers in other parts of the country, especially in the evening or at night. Heavy rain of up to 75 mm is expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, Galle and Matara districts. Fog may be observed in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, Western and North-Western provinces in the morning.
During the thunderstorm, temporary strong winds may also blow in those areas.
The public has been advised to take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of lightning strikes.
Further, it has been reported that the low pressure area is likely to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal sea areas near the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts on December 11th after the southeast Bay of Bengal sea areas. As a result, the rainfall conditions in the Northern and Eastern provinces are likely to increase from the 10th.
With these weather conditions, the development of the monsoonal conditions in the North is likely to intensify further, the Meteorological Department said.
