Heavy rain in many places today!

The low pressure area that has settled in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to move slowly west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast near North-Sri Lanka in the next 24 hours.

Due to this, there will be occasional showers or thundershowers in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western, and Western provinces.

The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy rains of up to 75 mm may occur at some places in the Northern Province. In other places, rain or thundershowers may occur in the evening or night.

Fog may occur in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces in the morning.

The public has been advised to take precautionary measures to avoid damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning strikes during the thunderstorm.

Wind conditions

Winds may blow northwards or northwestwards in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Galle via Kankesanthurai and Colombo. Its speed will be 30-40 kmph.

The wind speed will increase to 50-60 kmph in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai and Puttalam and to 50 kmph in the sea areas from Puttalam-Colombo-Galley.

Generally, the wind speed is likely to be 25-35 kmph in the other sea areas.

Sea condition

Turbulent to very turbulent conditions will be observed in the deep and shallow sea areas off the coasts from Puttalam to Mannar and Kankesanthurai to Mullaitivu.

Moderate to very turbulent conditions may be observed in the sea areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo. The sea condition will be moderate in other sea areas.

During thundershowers, the sea will be rough and windy, and the sea condition will be very rough.
