Justice for Tamils: Voice from the Hill Country Demands Permanent Solution, Not Political Gimmicks over Chemmani Mass Grave

A strong and emotional plea has emerged from the Hill Country Tamil youth, demanding a permanent solution for the long-suffering Tamil community, in the wake of global attention on the Chemmani mass grave in northern Sri Lanka.

The call was made by Ladurshan Vellaswamy, the District President of the Democratic Youth Congress in Nuwara Eliya, who stated that the Chemmani grave site, linked to wartime disappearances and atrocities, should not be reduced to a mere political tool.

“This is not the time for political theatrics. The Chemmani grave symbolizes the pain and the unanswered cries of enforced disappearances and Tamil genocide. What we demand is transitional justice, truth, and reconciliation for the Tamil people,” Vellaswamy said.

He highlighted the tragic irony that justice remains elusive even after decades, especially for families still searching for their loved ones. The mass grave at Chemmani, exposed internationally, serves as a grim reminder of Sri Lanka’s war crimes and the failure of legal accountability.

He further urged the government to take immediate and transparent action to resolve the Chemmani case fully, while also reaffirming the commitment of Hill Country Tamils to stand in solidarity with Northern and Eastern Tamils for equal rights and lasting justice.
