Heavy rains: Warning issued to the public

A warning has been issued to the public following the increase in rainfall in the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology today (18), this rainfall condition is expected to persist for the next few days.

Accordingly, it has been stated that occasional showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, Eastern, North Central, Uva and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district. In particular, heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is forecast at some places in the Uva and Eastern provinces, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts.

During the afternoon and night, showers or thundershowers will occur at some other places, and strong winds gusting up to 30-40 kmph are expected over the eastern slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central, Eastern and North-Western provinces, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Furthermore, strong winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph are expected over the western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Foggy weather is expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, Galle and Matara districts during the morning hours, and the public is advised to take precautionary measures in these areas.

During rain and thundershowers, the public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning strikes.
