Government officials have a duty to fulfill the needs of the public without causing inconvenience to the public – Northern Governor’s statement

The Governor of the Northern Province, Hon. Nagalingam Vedhanayakan, stated that it is the duty of government officials to fulfill the needs of the public who come to government offices as quickly as possible.

A sectoral review meeting of the Northern Provincial Finance and Planning, Law and Order, Land, Power, Housing and Construction, Tourism, Local Government, Provincial Administration, Rural Development, Road Development, Motor Transport and Transportation Ministries was held at the Northern Provincial Governor’s Secretariat yesterday morning (20.11.2024) under the chairmanship of the Northern Provincial Governor.

Speaking at the outset, the Governor stated that officials should not act in a way that would personally retaliate against the public and that the needs of the public seeking government offices should be fulfilled as quickly as possible.

People come to the Governor’s Office unable to fulfill their needs. The Governor said that each office should work efficiently to change that situation.

Furthermore, the Governor pointed out that attention should be paid to the long-standing problem of farmers, namely the market opportunity for their produce and the 10 percent waste, and directed that consideration be given to the creation of centers in each Divisional Secretariat division to collect agricultural produce. He also advised that attention be paid to the waste management practices followed in the markets.

The Governor also said that priority should be given to resettled people, people returning from India and widows in the housing project under the Ministry of Local Government.

The Heads of Departments pointed out in this meeting regarding the shortage of personnel.
It was reported that training is being provided to 75 people to address the shortage of assessors of local government councils.

It was reported that 17,138 families in the Northern Province are landless. The Governor stated that steps should be taken to eliminate this.

The Governor, who stated that he expected the new chairman to work in a manner that would increase the efficiency of the National Transport Commission, also directed that steps be taken to immediately cancel the licenses of buses that are operating illegally.

The meeting was attended by the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province, E. Ilangovan. He is the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Law and Order, Land, Power, Housing and Construction, Tourism, Local Government, Provincial Administration, Rural Development, Road Development, Motor Transport, and Transport. S. Pranavanathan, the Commissioner of Local Government of the Northern Province, and the Assistant Commissioners and Heads of Departments of each district also attended.
