Electricity Bill Relief: President Announces Special Subsidy for Low-Usage Consumers

In a move to provide further economic breathing room for the public, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake officially announced in Parliament today (April 7, 2026) a special relief package for electricity consumers using fewer than 90 units per month.

The President stated that this measure is intended to support millions of middle-income and low-income families during the upcoming tariff revision.

Key Highlights of the Power Subsidy

  • Target Group: Households consuming under 90 units of electricity monthly.
  • Government Funding: A total of Rs. 15 billion has been allocated to cover this subsidy for the next three months.
  • Implementation: The relief will be integrated into the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) next scheduled tariff reduction.

Why This Move?

Despite the current dry weather conditions and the high cost of running thermal power plants, the President emphasized that the government is prepared to absorb the additional costs rather than passing them on to the consumer.

“Our primary goal is to alleviate the economic burden on those who use the least amount of electricity,” the President noted during his address.

Coming on the heels of today’s significant fuel price cuts, this electricity relief provides a “double benefit” to the public. The government expects this move to help stabilize the prices of goods and services while directly lowering the monthly utility expenses for the most vulnerable sectors of society.
