Tensions escalated in Amsterdam on Thursday night as clashes erupted between Israeli football fans and pro-Palestinian protesters ahead of a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax. The confrontations took place outside the Johan Cruyff Arena, Ajax’s home stadium, and in surrounding areas.
Ajax won the match decisively, 5-0, leading 3-0 at halftime. According to Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen, the violence stemmed from rising tensions over several days. Hundreds of Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters held a vocal rally in the main square, waving Israeli flags and reportedly removing a Palestinian flag.
In anticipation of potential unrest, Amsterdam police had already increased their presence due to previous politically charged incidents. Social media videos showed Israeli fans shouting slogans as the flag was taken down.
Amsterdam city council member Jazie Veldhuyzen noted that the violence began when Maccabi supporters targeted homes displaying Palestinian flags, prompting local residents to organize a response to defend against these attacks.
