Australia–Japan Seal $7 Billion Warship DealLandmark defence pact to boost naval power and counter regional threats

Australia and Japan have signed contracts to begin a major $7 billion (A$10 billion) warship deal, marking one of Tokyo’s biggest military exports in decades.

The agreement includes the supply of 11 advanced Mogami-class frigates, with the first three to be built in Japan from 2029 and the remaining vessels to be constructed in Australia.

The deal was signed by Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to strengthening defence ties.

These warships are designed for submarine hunting, surface combat, and air defence, aimed at protecting key maritime trade routes in the Indo-Pacific region.

The agreement also highlights Japan’s shift away from its postwar pacifist stance, as it expands military cooperation beyond its traditional alliance with the United States to counter China’s growing influence.
