200K BC Hydro Customers Lose Power Due to Strong Winds
BC Hydro Reports Power Outages for 200K Customers Due to Strong Winds in Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast
Strong winds across the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast led to widespread power outages, with nearly 200,000 BC Hydro customers losing power on Saturday. An additional 12,000 outages were reported on Vancouver Island. As of 4:30 p.m., 129,000 outages remained, with Surrey being the hardest-hit area, where 75,000 customers were without power.
BC Hydro stated that fallen trees and branches have caused significant damage to power lines and electrical infrastructure. To restore power, approximately 250 BC Hydro and contractor crews are working to repair the damage. More crews are being brought in from unaffected regions to assist with restoration efforts.
The power outages are expected to continue due to weakened vegetation from a multi-year drought, which has made trees more susceptible to high winds. BC Hydro is urging residents to stay at least 10 meters away from downed power lines and call 911 in case of an emergency. Environment Canada issued a wind warning with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, triggering multiple ferry cancellations on major routes.
