Matt Gaetz Resigns from House Following Trump’s Attorney General Nomination

Us News

Matt Gaetz has officially resigned from the House of Representatives after being nominated by Donald Trump for the coveted position of attorney general.

During a recent gathering with Republican lawmakers, Trump jokingly referenced a potential run for a third presidential term, saying, “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s good, we’ve got to figure something else,’” which drew laughter from the crowd.

The US Constitution clearly prohibits presidents from serving more than two terms, whether consecutive or not.

Tom Cole, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, remarked that Trump was likely just having a bit of fun. “This is the final attempt unless a constitutional amendment occurs, which would need approval from three-quarters of the states and two-thirds of Congress—so that’s unlikely,” he explained.

Cole also recalled similar light-hearted comments made by Ronald Reagan, noting that such banter is not uncommon, especially after a significant electoral victory.

Democrat Daniel Goldman from New York criticized Trump’s remarks, asserting that any attempt to pursue a third term would be “blatantly unconstitutional.”
