Village drowned in tears – Protest demanding justice for mother and child!
A protest was held yesterday (03) to control accidents and to demand justice for the deceased mother and child.
In a horrific accident that took place in Kilinochchi town on the 25th of last month, four members of the same family were admitted to the intensive care unit and a child died.
The mother of the child, who was seriously injured in the incident, died the day before yesterday (02).
While the last rites of the child were held on the 1st, the last rites of the 34-year-old woman of the family were held yesterday.
Protest to draw public attention
In this situation, the people of the area launched a protest to control accidents and to demand justice for the deceased mother and child.
A large crowd of people participated in the protest. They also urged that strict legal action be taken against drunk driving and speeding. Furthermore, people demanded that street lights be installed at pedestrian crossings.
People’s demands against the incident
People urged that the city planning be reviewed, street lights be installed from Paranthan to Murigandy, and that traffic congestion be controlled by constructing double lanes.
They also urged that street lights be installed at Bharathan Junction, Depot Junction, Kakkakadai Junction, Karadipokku Junction, and other areas, that traffic police be posted on the streets, and that people be given strict punishments for negative actions.
Handing over of a petition to the police
People engaged in a protest demanding that the police and the concerned parties take action to protect the lives of innocent people and prevent the destruction of beautiful families through such incidents. Furthermore, a petition was handed over to many people including the President.
The letter to the Inspector General of Police was handed over to Senior Superintendent of Police Sisira Pettha Thandri. He stated that action has already been taken regarding such matters and that 1,000 drug testing teams have been deployed from Colombo. He further stated that the police have been advised to control issues such as speeding and drunk driving.
