Canada prepares to arrest Netanyahu

Canada prepares to arrest Netanyahu

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that he is prepared to arrest Netanyahu following the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) warrant.

Britain’s position

In the past, Britain has accepted the ICC’s warrant and said that Netanyahu could be arrested if he comes to the UK.

Trudeau has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be arrested if he comes to Canada following the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) warrant.

Trudeau’s comment

Trudeau said, “We respect international law and we follow the court’s warrant. This is a hallmark of Canadians.”

Crimes against humanity

The ICC said the warrant was issued for crimes against humanity resulting from Israel’s actions following the attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Opinions of other countries

Although British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that “Britain has a duty to follow international law”, he did not directly confirm Netanyahu’s arrest.

Of these, 15 countries, including Belgium, France, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, have accepted the ICC‘s decision.

US opposition

However, the United States and Australia expressed their views against the move. US President Joe Biden said, “There is no comparison between Israel and Hamas, and we support Israel’s security.”

It is noteworthy that a minority of countries support this move by the International Criminal Court.
