Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” Weakens as It Crosses Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coasts

The Cyclonic Storm “FENGAL” [pronounced as FEINJAL], which developed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, crossed the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts at 11:30 p.m. on 30th November 2024. The storm is expected to move west-southwestwards and gradually weaken into a deep depression within the next three hours. As a result, the influence of this system on Sri Lanka’s weather is steadily diminishing.

Weather Outlook for Sri Lanka:

  • Skies will be cloudy, with occasional showers or thundershowers in the Northern provinces.
  • Several spells of showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western, and North-central provinces, along with Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts.
  • Showers or thundershowers may also occur at isolated places elsewhere on the island, particularly during the evening or night.

Wind and Safety Advisory:

  • Strong winds of 50-55 km/h are possible at times in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Central, and Southern provinces.
  • The general public is urged to take precautions to minimize risks from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The situation is being monitored, and further updates will be issued as necessary.
