Relief for flood-affected farmers
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne has stated that the government expects to provide partial compensation for other crops in addition to the 6 crops for which compensation is being provided.
He made the above statement while commenting on the measures taken for agricultural lands damaged by the inclement weather.
Namal Karunaratne further commented,
Compensation is to be provided for 6 crops namely paddy, maize, onion, potato, soya and chilli.
We are ready to request the Cabinet to provide compensation for the money in the state treasury, considering the situation.
The bad weather has also caused a serious impact on agriculture in this country.
Agricultural lands in many areas, including paddy crops sown for the main season, are still submerged in water.
Due to the flooding caused by the adverse weather conditions accompanied by heavy rains in many areas, a large amount of agricultural lands have currently suffered major damage in many provinces including the North, North Central and East.
Agricultural organizations point out that the government should immediately implement a system for providing compensation for damages incurred in such a context.
