A person who is believed to be the leader of the Awa gang, who committed many major crimes in Jaffna district, was arrested while staying in a two-storeyed house in the Yassorapura hill area.
According to the police, if a house is provided on rent basis, an investigation will be conducted into what they are doing after renting that house.
Members of the public are also requested to report any suspicious circumstances to the police.
25-year-old Prabhakaran Kausigan was arrested yesterday morning (04) by the officers of the Anti-Corruption Unit while staying in a two-storied house in the Yasorapura hill area.
He is nicknamed Prabha and in the Awa gang he is known as Koenzi Thampa. His code number is 001.
The suspect has two open warrants each in Jaffna Magistrate’s Court and Mallagam Magistrate’s Court.
The suspect was an ice addict and during his arrest, one gram of 300 mg of ice, a pamphlet with the logos of an organized crime gang and a 100 rupee currency note with the same logo were recovered.
Cases of murder, attempted murder, gang membership, damaging vehicles and obstructing police officers were registered against him at Thellipalaya, Sunnagam, Manippai, Jaffna and Kilinochchi police stations.
It is also revealed that he has maintained contacts with foreign countries to carry out these activities.
It is reported that this suspect had bought a part of the Yasorapura house for twenty-five thousand rupees a month before and planned to go out and come back to this place to hide.
