Israel Launches Airstrikes in Homs Province, Syria
Israel launched airstrikes in Homs province, just north of Lebanon, targeting the Shuyrat air base and other locations near the city of Homs, according to the Syrian army.
The attacks, aimed at Iranian-backed militia positions, resulted in casualties, with Syrian air defenses reportedly intercepting Israeli missiles.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported four fatalities in the incident, including two civilians. Israel has a history of conducting military operations in Syria against what it claims are Iran-affiliated targets, although it typically refrains from commenting on specific strikes.
The ongoing tensions in the region have seen an escalation in Israeli attacks on Iranian-backed forces since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October.
Iranian forces have been involved in supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government since the early stages of the Syrian civil war. In a related development, the US conducted airstrikes in Syria and Iraq targeting Iran-linked sites in response to the killing of three US service personnel in Jordan on January 28.
