Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Officials Summoned to Cabinet Regarding Salary Hike Controversy
Officials from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) are set to appear before the Cabinet during its meeting on Tuesday (March 05) to address concerns surrounding the recent salary increase for CBSL employees, implemented without prior notice to relevant parties.
Media reports exposed a 70% salary hike for CBSL employees, leading to criticism from members of both the ruling party and the opposition in parliament.
Earlier in the week, CBSL Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, in a written request to the President, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, sought an opportunity to brief Members of Parliament through an appropriate Parliamentary Committee about the contentious salary increment.
In an official statement, CBSL clarified that the recent remuneration adjustment for its employees was sanctioned by the Governing Board under the triennial Collective Agreement with Trade Unions, covering the period from 2024 to 2026.
Given the circumstances, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe proposed that CBSL officials be summoned before the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) to provide clarifications on the matter.
As a result, CBSL officials have also been summoned to attend meetings with party leaders and the Committee on Public Finance (COPF), both scheduled for tomorrow (05).
